About 5N Pastures

Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, 5N Pastures began as a branch of Double N Farms, our 3rd generation family farm. We as a family began to realize how important it was to know how our food is grown and how it is processed. We soon began to see that other people felt the same.

When you purchase from 5N Pastures, we want you to feel confident that you are getting an ethically grown and humanely raised product that is always free of antibiotics and hormones!

“We raise them for us; that means we owe them some respect.

Why buy Local Beef?

Local beef has many benefits! One of the benefits of the local beef for sale here is that most of it is dry aged.

"One of the advantages of buying local meats is that small processors dry age the beef on site for 10 days to 14 days. This allows the enzymes in the meat to break down the connective tissue resulting in more tender and flavorful beef. Dry aged meats also contain less water so you aren't paying for added water when purchasing from a local farmer making it a better investment." - Ty Gustafson - Owner/Operator of Story City Locker.

ChopLocal has beef for sale from farms in Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Missouri, MinnesotaGeorgia, Wisconsin, New York, Vermont, Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Or browse our best-selling local beef. You can also purchase half a cow from many of our farms.

Why buy from local beef farms?

1. The US imported approximately 2.5 billion pounds of beef in 2021, all while US beef farmers struggle to make ends meet.
2. Much of the imported beef is used for ground beef for fast food restaurants.
3. Imported beef comes from countries like Brazil, which are home to dangerous animal diseases and corrupt meat inspection systems.

Interesting Fact: Why is cow meat called beef?

Long story short, it's because of the French invasion of Britain in 1066.

To go into a bit more detail, here's the history:

The Anglo-Saxons (British in the 11th century) spoke Old English, a language with Germanic roots. This language used the word "cu" to describe cattle.

When the French-speaking Normans invaded and conquered Britain, they continued to speak French and using the French term "boeuf" instead of "cu."

As time went-on, the fancier French term became "beef" and was used to describe meat from cattle.

Spoiler Alert: The "cow meat" you're looking for isn't from cows.

Technically, the beef at ChopLocal isn't actually cow meat.

Cows are female cattle who have given birth to a calf (baby bovine.) And beef from cows is not the highest quality. It is generally less tender and less flavorful, but makes great ground beef, hamburger and things like that.

The best beef comes from steers - younger, full-grown male cattle. This beef is tender, flavorful, and makes delicious steak and other high-end cuts.

5N Pastures Reviews

The ground beef was very good. So I'm coming back for more.

Pork Chops; 2/pk, bone-in, Pasture Heritage Pork: Great flavor, very juicy. We cooked them sous vide and finished in the pan. Perfect! They come vacuum sealed, double wrapped so that is nice. I did not measure the thickness but thought they were about like ones we have gotten through Crowd Cow.

Lard - High quality, good price, perfect for pie crusts. Used with 1/2 butter. Definitely recommend

These eggs are perfect. Solid shell that does not shatter at the slightest tap, firm, round, deeply orange colored yolk and a thick white. Perfect for poached eggs. No need to do anything other than drop them in the water and they hold up.

Sausage - Mild or Hot - Pastured Heritage Pork: I won’t buy any other brand. This is both lean and flavorful! My favorite.

your sausage is the best I’ve ever tasted. Discovered your products at the Saturday Farmers Market in Blairsville, you’re great.

We purchased meats from 5N Pastures and it is so amazing! The flavor is so much better than store bought and the meat is so tender! We will definitely be buying our meats from them in the future! Highly recommend!! 5 out of 5 stars!

We have purchased meat twice for ourself and other family members and it is beyond excellent,I have to wonder what have we been eating from even the high end grocery stores,it is no comparison to the meat we get from 5N pastures, with God’s help we will never buy from anyone else they are amazing Thank you so very much. Pam Smith Dahlonega,Ga.

Our experience with 5N Pastures was amazing. The packaging of the meat with so clean and the beef came in convenient 1 pound packages. We split a big order with 4 families and every agreed that the meat was delicious. We can't go back to that grocery store stuff any more. This is the only place we will be getting our meat. Give them a try. You won’t be disappointed.

If your looking for tasty, humanely raised meat…this is the family to buy from! Knowing where and how my food is taken care is of most importance. Also, supporting a local family farm business is better then buying from the store. So far my favorites are the sausage and ground lamb. Looking forward to the rest of what is on my box! Thank you for what you all do.
